Oliver J. Muensterer, MD, PhD

Professor and Chairman of Pediatric Surgery, Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich

Born in Canada, Prof. Muensterer obtained his medical degrees at both the University of Munich in Germany and at the University of Alicante in Spain. After postgraduate training in General Surgery at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, and a residency in Pediatrics at Duke University in Durham, NC, he returned to Munich for training in pediatric surgery. He completed his formal education with a fellowship in Pediatric Endosurgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL. Since then, he held appointments at the University of Leipzig, the University of Alabama, as well as the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, NY. He returned to Germany in October 2014 to direct the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, before accepting the opportunity to lead the pediatric surgery program at the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital at the LMU – University of Munich. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, 3 books and 40 book chapters on pediatric surgical issues. His main research focus is telemedicine and new media in pediatric surgery, pediatric foregut malformations and diseases, using magnets for treatment of esophageal atresia, fetal interventions, and using multiphoton microscopy in the management of pediatric tumors and Hirschsprung disease.
