Hugh Greenwood International Lecturer
Dr. Abdelhafeez is a pediatric oncology surgeon and Associate Professor at the University of Rochester. He previously served as Director of the Global Surgical Oncology Program in the Department of Pediatric Global Medicine and Fellowship Program Director in the Department of Surgery at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A recognized leader in international pediatric surgical oncology, Dr. Abdelhafeez serves on the Education Committee of the International Society of Pediatric Surgical Oncology (IPSO) and represents IPSO in the WHO’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC). He also leads the Oncology Group for the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS), working to enhance global collaboration in pediatric cancer care.
His research focuses on precision pediatric cancer surgery and strengthening global partnerships to improve surgical outcomes for children with cancer. He co-founded the
Adapted Program in Pediatric Oncology Surgery Education (APPOSE), an initiative dedicated to advancing surgical oncology education and training in resource-limited settings. Dr. Abdelhafeez has authored numerous evidence-based pediatric cancer surgical guidelines and developed a standardized approach for reporting intraoperative oncologic findings in childhood cancer surgeries.
He is also the principal investigator of two fluorescence-guided surgery trials exploring the feasibility of fluorescence-guided lymph node mapping in solid tumors and its role in tumor and margin identification.
