Jan B.F. Hulscher

Jan Hulscher full lengthJan Hulscher was born in 1970. He studied medicine and philosophy at the Free University of Amsterdam. After completing his studies he worked in several hospitals as a surgical resident, before starting his PhD studies in 1999. He obtained his PhD in 2002 (with honours). In 2000 he started his training as a general surgeon in the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam/St Lucas Andreas Hospitals. He completed his training in 2006. Afterwards he worked as a fellow in paediatric surgery in the University Medical Center Groningen. Since 2009 he is a consultant paediatric surgeon in the UMCG.

During his fellowship and his career as a paediatric surgeon he has developed a vast interest in neonatal surgery and hepatobiliary surgery. He currently is the coordinator of the UMCG paediatric hepatobiliary surgery team. He has conducted several multicentre trials aimed at elucidating the pathophysiology of NEC as well as finding novel biomarkers for this disease. He serves as chairman of the research consortium of the Dutch Pediatric Surgical Association and is member of the Dutch Institute for Clinical Auditing/European Paediatric Surgical Audit.
