Ernst van Heurn

Ernest van Heurn is professor of paediatric surgery and head of department of the Paediatric Surgical Centre Amsterdam (VU Medical Centre and Academic Medical Centre AMC). He qualified as Medical Doctor at Leiden University in 1988 was trained as general surgeon at the Maastricht University Medical Centre, where he also obtained his PhD degree in 1997. He received further paediatric surgical training at Great Ormond Street (cardiothoracic unit), Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong (Prof. Paul K.H.Tam) and at the paediatric surgical unit in Maastricht where he became consultant and later professor of paediatric surgery in 2009.

His paediatric surgical research interests include compromised gut and morbid obesity in adolescents. He has published more than 150 articles in peer reviewed journals, is the author of a variety of book chapters and is member of the Editorial Board of several international journals . Next to scientific interests he has and has had several organisational functions including the board membership of the College of Surgeons of the Netherlands and chairmanship of the Netherlands’ Association of Paediatric Surgeons. In Europe he organised the yearly EUPSA congress in Maastricht and was member of the EUPSA Scientific and Network Offices.
